The Quadriga depicts the goddess of victory commanding a chariot drawn by four horses marching peace into the city. In 1806 Napoleon marched triumphantly into Berlin and carried the Quadriga away with him to Paris as a spoil of war. Original caption: As was the case in much of Berlin, many of the buildings around Potsdamer Platz were turned to rubble by air raids and heavy artillery bombardment during the last years of World War II. Potsdamer was then spilt into sections following the dividing of Berlin by the Allies and the Soviets. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall it has been reborn into a center of business and commerce.
