18 Mar 1967, Cornwall, England, UK --- Supertanker Torrey Canyon engulfed in flames and smoke after running aground between the Isles of Scilly and Land's End, Cornwall, England carrying 117,000 tons of crude oil. En route to England from the Persian Gulf, the ship was stranded by an error in ship maneuvering. About 93,000KL of crude oil loaded on the ship flowed out, and contaminated a total area of about 300km along the southwestern coastline of England and along the northwestern coastline of France. After a failed salvage attempt the ship was eventually destroyed by the Royal Air Force in order to stop the outflow of the remaining 20,000 tons of crude oil. --- Image by © Skyscan/Corbis

Hawk jets of the Red Arrows, Britain's RAF aerobatic team practice display using an old ship wreck as display datum (centre). Looking out to the Mediterranean Sea from the Akrotiri Peninsular, Cyprus, we see the elite team, practising their display, a show-stopping manoeuvre of their 25-minute air show display routine. A rusted and crumbling hulk of a ship lies in the shallow surf and the Hawk jets used by the Red Arrows fan out above it using red, white and blue smoke. The shipwreck's remains provide a sad foreground to the dynamic flying beyond making a graphic landscape. 'Datum' is an axis on which the Red Arrows focus their displays, from where the whole show is visible at the crowd's centre. 'The Wreck' is but one of a series of datum points selected by the team leader at short notice to simulate diverse geographical features and wind directions
28 Jul 2008, Zakynthos, Greece --- This is the famous wreckage of the smuggler's ship named Panagiotis which went aground in October 1980 on the Navagio Beach, Zakynthos, Greece. The picture was taken from the cliff just above the beach. I took me and my son Ziga almost one hour of rock-climbing under the hot Greek son. --- Image by © Slavko Pusavec/National Geographic My Shot/National Geographic Creative/Corbis
Abandoned ship that ran aground years ago in Canal Messier (in vicinity of Seno Iceberg). Southwestern Patagonia is one of the least populated and little visited areas on earth. Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, Chile. Covering an area of 35,000 sq. km, this park is the largest protected area in Chile. Stretching from the Gulfo de Penas to Ultima Esperanza in the south, and from the Pacific Ocean on the west to the Andes in the east, it encompasses thousands of islands, fiords, glaciers, and a major portion of the Southern Icecap (Hielo Sur). The area shows different examples and stages of glacial action and periglacial ecosystems succession. The Southern Patagonian Icefield is the largest body of ice outside the polar regions, and is declining in size.
