03 Mar 2010 --- Mute swan Cygnus olor An adult emerges serenely from a thick mist into dawn sunlight. The mute swan is the largest bird in the UK and one of the heaviest flying birds in the world with adults weighing in at around 15kg. They are easily distinguished by their orange bill with attendant black knob and are found in a variety of freshwater habitats as well as tidal estuaries.
