Original caption: High noon sunlight beams to the floor of Antelope Canyon, a slot canyon near Page, Arizona. Slot canyons are formed as fast-flowing water carves pathways through relatively soft sandstone. Sunlight reaches the floors of such deeply incised canyons for only a few moments each day. Suspended dust in the air is illuminated by these rare sun beams. --- Image by © Ed Darack/Science Faction/Corbis
22 Sep 2012 --- Zebra is a tiny but very colorful slot canyon located in a remote area of the Grand Staircase. The canyon itself is only about 100 yards long, and it can be reached after a 2-1/2 mile hike from the trailhead. The hike is pretty easy, but once you reach Zebra you have to wade through waste-deep water for the first half of the slot. The last 50 yards make it all worthwhile. --- Image by © Doug Meek/Corbis
