Original caption: 2,2-Dipyridyl (CAS# 366-18-7, 2,2'-Dipyridine) is a reagent used for the determination of iron. It is a white, crystalline solid that melts at about 70C. It can be used in transition-metal catalyst chemistry for uniform polymerization and in luminescence chemistry and spectrophotometric analysis. --- Image by © David Malin/Science Faction/Corbis

Original caption: Pentaerythritol (CAS# 115-77-5, 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol) is an alcohol used in the surface coating industries for making synthetic resins and in paints and varnishes. It crystallizes with random crack and fine rectilinear features. --- Image by © David Malin/Science Faction/Corbis
Original caption: Maleic acid (CAS# 110-15-6, butanedioic acid) is a colorless, crystalline compound that occurs naturally in a wide variety of unripe fruit and is used as a flavoring and in the aging of wine. It occurs in sour apples, hence the name, from the Latin 'malum' meaning apple. --- Image by © David Malin/Science Faction/Corbis
Original caption: 2,2' 4',2 mixture, Diphenyl Sulphone (CAS# 127-63-9). Unusual texture in in white crystals, melting at about 125C. DPS is used as a sensitizer for recording papers, as an additive in metal electro-plating baths and a raw material for organic synthesis. Crystals grown from the melt. --- Image by © David Malin/Science Faction/Corbis
Original caption: Tartaric acid (CAS# 87-69-4) is a white crystalline organic acid found in many plants. It occurs in multiple stereoisomers and is partly responsible for the sharp taste in wine. Tartaric acid is used chiefly in the form of its salts, cream of tartar and Rochelle salt. The black spheres are from air entrapped in the crystals before melting. --- Image by © David Malin/Science Faction/Corbis
Original caption: DDT (CAS# 50-29-3) is a white, crystalline solid, freely soluble in most organic solvents. It was one of the first synthetic insecticides and remains among the most effective. The discovery of its insecticidal properties led to a Nobel prize for the Swiss entomologist Dr. Paul Mueller in 1948. Unfortunately, DDT is very persistent in the environment and accumulates in the food chain, affecting (among other things) the strength of eggshells in birds in the wild. --- Image by © David Malin/Science Faction/Corbis
