08 Feb 1995 --- The Waipoua River flows through a dense forest of tree ferns in the Waipoua Kauri Forest Reserve, set aside in 1952. The reserve protects the largest remaining stand of mature Kauri forest to be found in New Zealand, with only 2500 hectares remaining of a forest which once covered much of the country. The trees were aggressively cleared to make way for farmland, and used for ship masts and spars during early British colonization. --- Image by © Paul A. Souders/CORBIS
